Overview

It is common for families to take a day trip on the weekend to local attractions such as beaches, parks, castles and other amenities. This can, however, be a stressful time for the parents, due to having to organise the children, lunches, equipment, etc. A further headache is having to organise driving directions for the day, especially if the trip is to a new location.

Fingal County Council would like to offer an online service to day trippers needing driving directions to local attractions. The service will ideally list nearby amenities, allowing the visitor to choose where they would like to spend the day. The web app will then display a route and driving directions from the visitor's home address to the address of any attractions.

The web app is simple to use:

  1. Move the marker to your home location or click 'Find my Location'.
  2. To help you plan your day out, the app shows the weather for the next few days.
  3. You then select what type of activities you prefer, as well as if you would like to stop for a coffee. You can also specify if you are travelling with children or disabled passengers.
  4. The app will then make a suggestion for a day trip in the local area, showing locations of interest on the map.
  5. You also have the opprtunity to get driving directions for the day and details of each attraction.

With this service, it is hoped that awareness of local amenities is improved and that individuals and families find planning a day out in Fingal a lot more fun and easy.

The web app is available at:

Castle Master is a joyful way of gaining knowledge about heritage and ancient castles in Fingal County. It adopts an informal learning approach by delivering the information through a mobile game. The challenges incorporated in the game aims to motivate learning through correctly answering questions that reflect the richness of these historical monuments and incentivise players to visit the castles. The gameplay involves arcade and multimedia attractions.
