Posted by Dominic Byrne on Wed, 04 Jul 2012 17:07:18 BST

Fingal Open Data was awarded a Taoiseach's Public Service Excellence Award at a recent ceremony in Dublin Castle.

Outgoing Mayor of Fingal Councillor Gerry McGuire accepted a Public Service Excellence Award on behalf of Fingal County Council from Taoiseach Enda Kenny T.D. at a ceremony in Dublin Castle on 21st June 2012.  The Council won the award for the Fingal Open Data initiative – the first Open Data website in Ireland.

The Public Service Excellence Awards are held every two years to recognise innovation and best practice in public service administration and service delivery, and to share ideas across Public Service organisations and sectors.  189 applications were received and assessed by an Awards Selection Committee and from these twenty winning projects were selected. The awards ceremony was preceded by a showcase conference in Dublin Castle Conference Centre where the Fingal Open Data initiative was presented and exhibited.

One of the aims of the Fingal Open Data initiative was to play a leading role in Open Data in Ireland.  Since the Council launched the website, Open Data has become Government policy and all public bodies are now required to start publishing Open Data.  This award is recognition of the success of Fingal Open Data as a lead initiative for Open Data in Ireland.
