8th Open Data Ireland Meetup

Posted by Dominic Byrne on Wed, 17 Jul 2013 10:14:22 BST

The 8th Open Data Ireland Meetup took place on Thursday 20th June in EngineYard, Barrow Street, Dublin. The theme of this meetup was Open Government Partnership, and was attended by over 20 people.

Eamon Leonard @EamonLeonard welcomed everyone to EngineYard and handed over to Denis Parfenov @xzy_ to kick off proceedings.  Denis recounted Ireland's journey to date leading to the Government recently applying to join the Open Government Partnership.  He outlined the next steps in the process - public engagement with Civic Society leading to a national Action Plan.

The first speaker of the evening was Abhinav Bahl from Global Integrity @globalintegrity who gave an overview of Open Government Partnership and recounted approaches taken by different countries in developing their Action Plans.  Abhinav said that successful consultations generally involve multiple Government Departments, particularly those with experience of engaging in public consultations.  Countries who used multiple modes of engagement tended also to have more successful engagements such as conferences, online collaboration/engagement, traditional submissions and informal meetups.  Croatia was cited as a good example of how a Government engaged.  A number of people in attendance had heard a presentation from Tomislav Korman @tomislavkorman Croatian Government Head of Online Communication at a conference in Dublin earlier in the week where he outlined how the Croatian Government had successfully engaged online through social media channels such as Facebook and Twitter.

Next up was Nuala Haughey of Transparency Ireland @transparency_ie who presented on the Consultation Process with Civil Society for Ireland's Action Plan for the Open Government Partnership.  Nuala announced that the Open Government Partnership Ireland website would be online on Monday 24th June 2013.  A consultation meeting will take place in the Wood Quay Venue in Dublin on 10th July 2013 from 9:30am-4:30pm followed by further consultation meetings on 8th August, 2013 and 5th September, 2013.

The meetup then broke up into two discussion groups to talk about the process for delivering Ireland's Action Plan and possible actions.  Mick Byrne @themicker1971 has written up a summary of the main points discussed about the process.

The next Open Data Ireland Meetup #9 will concentrate on Local Government.
The event will take place on Thursday 18th July 2013 at 6:30pm in Engine Yard https://tito.io/open-data-ireland/meetup-8
